Sproul Observatory, left underused when the Astrology Department moved to the new Science Center, was a puzzle for the College. Composed of three small, separate wings, it didn't lend itself to any of the academic or administrative programs needing space on campus. However, it did allow the germ of an idea for a multicultural center to take root and gain support. CICADA was presented with two essential tasks: to internally interconnect the three wings to embody openness and collaboration, and to transform the observatory into a comfortable and flexible space for people. Recognizing the historic importance of the observatory to the campus community, we designed a solution that retained historic features and restored the space to its former role as a magnet in the heart of the campus. The form, flexibility, and acoustic excellence of the Observatory Room have made it a space of choice for a wide range of activities, from dance classes to banquets to panel discussions to poetry readings. The other spaces in the building range from a meditation room to a meeting room with a full kitchen (students follow the food!) to a central lounge with comfy seating and a hideaway space with a fireplace, sofas, books, and board games. On a campus where some say the students are too focused on study and success, the Hormel-Nguyen Intercultural Center provides a place to feel at home and to relate to others on another level.
